Why does the same Android app show 37 MB on the Play Store… but 101 MB for internal testing?

A junior developer asked me this recently:

“Why is our app suddenly almost 3× larger in internal testing?”

At first, it looks like something went wrong with the build.

But usually, nothing is wrong. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ” What is actually happening?

The size you see on Google Play isn't necessarily the size of your entire Android App Bundle.

When you upload an AAB (Android App Bundle), Google Play can generate and deliver device-specific APKs.

That means two different devices may receive different pieces of the same application.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Why can the size be different?

Google Play can optimize the delivered app based on things such as:

CPU architecture

  • arm64-v8a

  • armeabi-v7a

  • x86

  • x86_64

Screen density

  • mdpi

  • hdpi

  • xhdpi

  • xxhdpi

  • etc.

Language

  • English

  • Hindi

  • Spanish

  • and others

Dynamic features

  • Optional feature modules may be delivered only when required.

So a user doesn't necessarily download everything that exists in your AAB.

๐Ÿš€ The important part

Think of your AAB as a master package:

                Android App Bundle
                       │
          ┌────────────┼────────────┐
           ↓ ↓ ↓
                   ARM64 x86_64 Resources
          │ │ │
          └────────────┼────────────┘
                       ↓
               Device-specific APK
                       ↓
                    User

Google Play determines which pieces are appropriate for the user's device and delivers those.

๐Ÿงช But what about internal testing?

This is where things can get confusing.

Depending on the testing track, installation method, build configuration, and device, the delivered package can differ from what you see in production.

So:

Production size ≠ AAB size ≠ every test installation size

They are measuring different things.

๐Ÿง  The takeaway

Don't look at a single “MB” number and assume that's your application's true size.

When investigating app size, always ask:

“What exactly am I measuring?”

  • AAB download size?

  • APK size?

  • Device-specific download size?

  • Installed size?

  • Universal APK?

  • Base APK + splits?

Understanding AAB + split APKs makes those confusing Play Store size differences much easier to explain.

And this is one of those Android concepts that seems small—until someone asks you “Why is our app 3× bigger?” ๐Ÿ˜„
