Slot Table in Jetpack Compose — What is it actually doing?

If you use Jetpack Compose, you’ve probably heard the term Slot Table.

But what exactly is it?

Here’s a simple way to understand it 👇

🧠 Think of Slot Table as Compose's memory of the Composition

When Compose runs your composable functions, it needs to remember information about the composition so it can work efficiently when your state changes.

The Slot Table is one of the internal structures used by the Composer to retain that information.

For example:

@Composable
fun Profile(name: String) {

    Text("Hello $name")

}

Compose doesn't simply forget everything after this function executes.

It maintains information about the composition so that during later recompositions it can determine how the current composition relates to the previous one.

🔄 What happens when state changes?

Imagine:

var count by remember {
    mutableStateOf(0)
}

When count changes, Compose doesn't blindly throw away the entire UI and start from zero.

Instead, the Composer uses the information it has retained about the previous composition to reconcile the new composition with the existing one.

Conceptually:

Previous Composition
        ↓
   Slot Table
        ↓
State changes
        ↓
Recomposition
        ↓
Compare / reconcile
        ↓
Update required parts

⭐ And what about remember?

This is where the Slot Table becomes particularly interesting.

val userName = remember {
    "Android Developer"
}

remember allows Compose to retain a value across recompositions.

The Composer associates remembered values with positions/groups in the composition so they can be retrieved during subsequent recompositions.

That's one reason this works:

Initial composition
        ↓
remember { value }
        ↓
Value retained
        ↓
Recomposition
        ↓
Same remembered value

⚠️ One important misconception

The Slot Table is not simply a list of UI elements.

It doesn't mean:

“Every Text() is stored here and Compose updates that exact object.”

The Compose runtime maintains a more complex representation of the composition, including groups and slots used by the Composer to track and retain composition information.

🚀 Why should Android developers care?

You don't normally interact with the Slot Table directly.

But understanding the idea helps explain why concepts such as:

  • remember

  • recomposition

  • stable identity

  • keys

  • state

  • key { }

matter so much in Compose.

🧠 Simple takeaway

Slot Table = an internal data structure that helps Compose retain and reconcile composition information across recompositions.

You don't need to manipulate it.

But understanding why Compose needs it makes the whole recomposition model much easier to understand.

And once you understand that, Compose's performance model starts making a lot more sense. 🚀
